Summer Solstice, Midsummer, and Litha: Here’s How to Celebrate

These are just examples. We all have these choices to make, individually and collectively. Uranus breaks up what is inauthentic in Saturn, freeing him of the bonds of obsolete tradition, urging us all towards liberation. The impulse is towards breakthrough and moving on from the restrictive patterns of the past. The holding places of fear and mistrust will be exposed, and it is our sense of woundedness that will hold us back. The opportunity is here; we have to do the work — ours are the only hands god has, as the phrase has it. Certainly the challenges we face should incentivise us to do the restructuring work Uranus is encouraging as Pluto continues its slow trawl through Capricorn, sign of the Winter Solstice.

Pluto exposes abuse of all kinds; its operation is drastic and traumatic. Lowering his voice to almost a whisper, he said that if I really felt that my spirit was distorted I should simply fix it — purge it, make it perfect — because there was no other task in our entire lives more worthwhile. Not to fix the spirit was to seek death, and that was the same as to seek nothing, since death was going to overtake us regardless of anything. May it be honoured. A beautiful moment of balance arises before the scales tilt towards winter and the closing in of darkness in the northern hemisphere.

This reflective, mindful quality of weighing feels especially welcome at this time: recent months have been fraught with confusion and change socially and politically. The pause that Libra brings invites soulful reflection. The established order of our world is changing — this is manifestly so — and we need to meet it as it is and not waste energy in wishing it were otherwise. On 10th September the third and final square between Saturn and Neptune occurred. Saturn represents the established order, authoritarian and controlling: the father writ large.

There are no boundaries in oneness. Our sense of safety and security is bound up with Saturn.

It is frightening for us to have its hold relentlessly weakened and washed away by Neptune. Right now Saturn is writing its laws in the sand and the tide is coming in.

Saturn cannot legislate for separative identity while under pressure from the more powerful Neptune which insists that all separation is illusory. We are all connected. Lethargy and insularity at this time will be damaging. Neptune asks us to look outwards, to be inspired by possibilities, to have imagination. Our clinging to our little islands of selfhood, staring inwards, is no longer supported. Hope and harmony lie in participation, individually and collectively.

These are times of great change and the equinox is accompanied by a grand mutable cross the cross of constant mutations signalling a critical time of enforced stasis. This is a moment for the scales to fall from our eyes! The Moon is also involved in this grand cross, being opposed by Saturn and squared by Neptune and Mercury — the scales falling from our eyes will have a considerable emotional impact. We need new social structures, community groups, circles of shared endeavour to revivify our culture. In this moment there is a capacity for innovation and insight.

The search for renewal is not a riskless enterprise, but we cannot stand still. A magical thing, the calyx: if you open it up intrusively, before the flower is formed, it seems to be an empty green space. Given a bit more time you may see an embryonic green flower. Give it its own time and the calyx opens of itself to reveal a beautiful, colourful blossom.

Sun’s entry into zodiac signs, 12222

The calyx is the tangible space of creation or manifestation. The calyx is more rightly the womb, the cauldron of the mother. This is a very fitting symbol for the Summer Solstice, defined as it is by the passing of the Sun into the sign of Cancer — sign of the mother, ruled by the Moon, and signifying the umbilical connection between mother and child. The divine idea initiated in Aries fire at the Spring Equinox comes into manifestation in Cancer water at the Summer Solstice.

This time of reckoning under the eye of the Sun, now at the peak of its powers in the northern hemisphere, asks us to be conscious of what is developing within the calyx — what qualities, exactly, are we fostering inwardly and outwardly? These things will soon be visible and will come to fruition as we head towards the Autumn Equinox. Past intentions and actions are the seeds of our future. The Summer Solstice is charged this year with power and intensity.

A series of three squares between Saturn and Neptune in Sagittarius and Pisces respectively began in November last year as the oceanic force of Neptune erodes the established order as represented by Saturn. The second square occurs on 18 th June, two days prior to the Solstice. The third and final square will come just days before the Autumn Equinox on 10 th September. Things cannot remain the same; the tide is taking us whether we will it or not. Neptune, god of the sea, brings both inspiration and sacrifice.

We see the seas taking many lives as desperate people seek a place of refuge from radical insecurity. Established authority on this little island of ours seems hellbent on interpreting this phenomenon as an economic question. Neptune calls upon us to develop compassion and empathy; if we cannot raise our game, Neptune will deliver its goods in a different register, as deceit and delusion. This brings aggravation and tension caused by the need for change as we seek a new orientation and a new way of relating little local perceptions to a broader context of meaning that allows us to understand our place in the wider world.

Faith and wisdom are what we need; what we seem to have is a media hoopla surrounding our relationship with our neighbours. What is the ethical imperative at this time? What serves social responsibility and social justice? The astrology of the Summer Solstice indicates nothing less than a crisis of confusion and nervous strain as the titanic forces of Neptune and Saturn battle it out in the company of Mercury and Jupiter: all four being involved in a tight Grand Cross at the time of the Solstice, making the calyx feel more like a padded cell, a place of absolute restriction.

When stress levels spike we need to find our ground and our centredness. It seems as if we are about to come face to face with aspects of our national cultures that have not been consciously acknowledged. Poised at this point of stasis, fraught with strain and tension, the oak king is slain by the holly king and the descent towards darkness begins. Becoming aware of the qualities and intentions we are individually holding is inestimably valuable; grounding our disquiet and tension, likewise.

Life supports us totally in whatever it is we choose to believe. Winter Solstice, 21st December , There is power in silence. They have two points of intersection and two places at which they are furthest from each other. The points of intersection are the equinoxes yielding equal day and night across the globe , and the places of greatest distance mark the solstices yielding shortest day and shortest night. So these moments are astronomical phenomena arising from the relationship between our home planet and its local star.

All the youthfulness of land and water smokes like an incense in my heart; and the breath of all things plays on my thoughts as on a flute. For staying is nowhere. As Don Juan Matus tells Carlos Castaneda in Journey to Ixtlan : Lowering his voice to almost a whisper, he said that if I really felt that my spirit was distorted I should simply fix it — purge it, make it perfect — because there was no other task in our entire lives more worthwhile.

As the World Turns

Post to Cancel. You are here: Home. In these times of chaotic change for much of the planet no doubt we all want to stay safe and have a good time. Some things never change Julie Simmons, June 28, Mars Retrograde - Thoughts If you need some inspiration for Mars retrograde or the world at this moment try this. Sometimes I wonder what it is we're doing when we try to fathom our world astrologically.

Here are some morning ramblings. A gentle acknowledgment of the turning of the wheel of the year. Second floor. Julie Simmons, December 23, Aligned for Mercury Retrograde This Mercury Retrograde period starts at 15 degrees of Capricorn, which is mighty close to an exact conjunction with Pluto. Pluto is ponderous and deep. It suggests we take a good, long almost meditative look at the circumstances of the moment.

Everything in nature is balanced and celebrating its rhythms reminds us to do the same. No family, blood or bond, is without its wounds. No group of people that gathers around an intention gets out of the learning process of loving and being loved, without also hurting and being hurt, disappointing and being disappointed. No gathering of humans gets saved from the necessary work of self-reflection.

The nature of family is that we are bound to one another through our joy and our pain. Working through the issues we encounter within family structures is no small feat. With nothing to solve, we all have to learn how to hold what gets triggered with great care and consciousness. Our past and the feelings that accompany it need to be handled with a slow and steady care. It takes boundaries made of steal to be able to stay with an emotionally charged process instead of trying to rush through it. It takes a great dedication to be loving and kind when trying to earnestly understand other human beings.

It takes a great desire to grow up and out of the harmful behaviors we learned as young ones, and every effort to do so is a triumph of epic proportions. Cancer is the cardinal water sign that brings us back home, to the family, to the origin story. Its waters are primordial. Holding space for emotions to rise, flood, and finally wash through us, a full moon in Cancer will always tenderize, and aim to purify, what it touches. Exposing feelings normally covered over by everyday life, this full moon draws to the surface what normally gets to scurry away from examination.

When we allow our feelings to exist, to inform us, and to teach us something that we had previously ignored, we are released from their grip. We are no longer being unconsciously driven by them. We are free to experience more of life as it is, more of ourselves with less burden, and more of our relationships with less projection. Come this holiday, solstice, full moon season, give yourself the gift of tenderness and release. The winter solstice is a time of celebration, a time to call the sun back from its most distant journey away from us.

A time to kindle the flames within us, lighting our own way back to ourselves. This full moon echoes this sentiment as it finds more hours to shimmer and shine in the longest night in the northern hemisphere. When the heavens party, so too should we, even if a little emotionally. What you heal within your origin story, you heal in your present and future.

No matter what is going on, look to the root of the issue. Investigate your emotional responses. There is great intelligence in them. They speak to something you had to gloss over earlier in life that is now ready to be received.

Midsummer Picnic

Be as honest as possible about what you need when you need it. What touches your heart needs to roll off your tongue. Tell your siblings, cousins, aunties, and besties how you feel about them. Tell yourself the truth about what ails you. Tell on yourself when your pride is inhibiting your healing.

Summer Solstice 2019

Honesty with others requires us to witness where they are at, where we are at, and where we can meet, if possible. Find ways to stay fluid with your feelings.
