The IAU General Assembly provides librarians with a unique opportunity to interact with astronomers from all over the world. From the perspective of an ORCID Ambassador, the Focus Group Meeting on "Scholarly Publication in Astronomy" also provides an opportunity to demonstrate the cooperation and collaboration needed by individual astronomers , societies, librarians, publishers and bibliographic database providers to achieve universal adoption of ORCID, a standard unique identifier for authors, just as the DOI digital object identifier has been adopted for each journal article published.

Analysis of expired medications in Serbian households. PubMed Central. Abstract Introduction An ongoing issue of expired medications accumulating in some households is a universal problem around the world. The aim of the study was to investigate the extent and structure of expired medications in Serbian households, and to determine which therapeutic groups generated the most waste. Methods This was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted in households in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia.

The study had been performed over 8 month period December - July and it consisted of personal insights into the medication inventory in households. Results Of families, agreed to participate and complete the questionnaire In almost a half of households The amount of expired medications was items, corresponding to 9. The majority of expired medications Expired medications in the households belonged mostly to 3 categories: antimicrobials for systemic use Conclusions This study revealed that there were relatively large quantities of expired medications in Serbian households, with a high prevalence of antibiotics for systemic use, anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic products, and medications for alimentary tract and metabolism.

Astronomical Methods in Aerial Navigation. The astronomical method of determining position is universally used in marine navigation and may also be of service in aerial navigation. The practical application of the method, however, must be modified and adapted to conform to the requirements of aviation. Much of this work of adaptation has already been accomplished, but being scattered through various technical journals in a number of languages, is not readily available.

This report is for the purpose of collecting under one cover such previous work as appears to be of value to the aerial navigator, comparing instruments and methods, indicating the best practice, and suggesting future developments. The various methods of determining position and their application and value are outlined, and a brief resume of the theory of the astronomical method is given.

Observation instruments are described in detail. A complete discussion of the reduction of observations follows, including a rapid method of finding position from the altitudes of two stars. Maps and map cases are briefly considered. A bibliography of the subject is appended. Women Astronomers : Australia: Women astronomers in Australia. Ragbir Bhathal summarizes the role played by women astronomers in Australia's astronomy, now and in the past.

Australia has a great tradition in astronomy, from the early observations of Aboriginal people through the colonial drive to explore and understand, culminating in the established excellence of research there today. Women have contributed to this achievement in no small way, yet their contribution has been unremarked, if not ignored. Here I summarize the historical and present state of affairs and look forward to a brighter and more equitable future.

Astronomical Station at Vidojevica. Recently a project was started aimed at building a new astronomical station at the mountain of Vidojevica in Serbia ASV as an extension of the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade. The first phase - ASV1 - is planned to be finished during ASV1 will consist of one observatory dome, a reflector of 60cm aperture, and a dormitory. In this year, the Faculty of Mathematics and its Department of Astronomy applied for the project of reinforcing and upgrading it to ASV2. The project objective is to improve the research capacities in astronomy and applied mathematics in Serbia and Western Balkan.

On his journeys to Nicaea, St Sava visited emperors Theodore I Lascaris ruled from and John II Vatatzes, who richly rewarded him, which was probably of crucial importance for the foundation of hospitals in the Monastery of Hilandar and the Monastery of Studenica These hospitals had special departments for the treatment of patints with epilepsy. According to researches conducted up-to-date, these departments are considered to be the oldest institutions for epilepsy treatment.

Monastery hospitals in the West served primarily as a shelter for the poor and patients with chronic incurable diseases. The development of Serbian monastery hospitals was a long process and it included institutions that lasted for a long time for over two centuries in which, among others, those affected by epilepsy were cured. Moreover, the astronomers and technicians of Korea frequently visited China to study astronomy and instrument making, and they brought back useful information in the form of new published books or specifications of instruments. As a result, a royal observatory equipped with 15 types of instrument was completed in The topic of this study are representations of lancet or phlebotome in frescoes and icons of Serbian medieval art. The very presence of this medical instrument in Serbian medieval art indicates its usage in Serbian medical practices of the time. Phlebotomy is one of the oldest forms of therapy, widely spread in medieval times.

Lancet or phlebotome is identified based on archaeological finds from the Roman period, while finds from the Middle Ages and especially from Byzantium have been scarce. Examination of written records and art points to the conclusion that Serbian medieval medicine, both in theory and in practice, belonged entirely to European traditions of the period.

TWAN creates wide-angle images of the night sky in important natural and historic settings around the world, dramatically demonstrating the universal nature and appeal of the night sky.

Astronomers as Software Developers. Astronomers know that their research requires writing, adapting, and documenting computer software. Furthermore, they often have to learn new computer languages and figure out how existing programs work without much documentation or guidance and with extreme time pressure.

These are all skills that can lead to a software development job, but recruiters and employers probably won't know that. I will discuss all the highly useful experience that astronomers may not know that they already have, and how to explain that knowledge to others when looking for non-academic software positions. I will also talk about some of the pitfalls I have run into while interviewing for jobs and working as a developer, and encourage you to embrace the curiosity employers might have about your non-standard background. Astrobiology: An astronomer 's perspective. In this review we explore aspects of the field of astrobiology from an astronomical viewpoint. We therefore focus on the origin of life in the context of planetary formation, with additional emphasis on tracing the most abundant volatile elements, C, H, O, and N that are used by life on Earth.

We first explore the history of life on our planet and outline the current state of our knowledge regarding the delivery of the C, H, O, N elements to the Earth. It is now clear that the early stages of star formation fosters the creation of water and simple organic molecules with enrichments of heavy isotopes. These molecules are found as ice coatings on the solid materials that represent microscopic beginnings of terrestrial worlds. Based on the meteoritic and cometary record, the process of planet formation, and the local environment, lead to additional increases in organic complexity.

The astronomical connections towards this stage are only now being directly made. Although the exact details are uncertain, it is likely that the birth process of star and planets likely leads to terrestrial worlds being born with abundant water and organics on the surface. On Tokugawa Bakufu's astronomical officials.

Tokugawa Bakufu's astronomical office, established in , is the post for calendar reform. The reform was conducted when the calendar did not predict peculiar celestial phenomena, such as solar or lunar eclipses. It was, so to speak, the theme of the ancient astronomy. From removal of the embargo on importing western science books in , Japanese astronomers studied European astronomy and attempted to apply its knowledge to calendar making. Moreover, they knew the Copernican system and also faced several modern astronomical subjects.

This paper overviews the activities of Paris observatory and French astronomers in the 17th and 18th centuries, and survey what modern astronomical subjects were. Finally, it sketches a role of the Edo observatory played in the Japanese cultural history. ASDS provides integrated access to 56 astronomical software packages, with more than 16, URLs indexed for full-text searching. Users are performing about searches per month. A new aspect of our service is the inclusion of telescope and instrumentation manuals, which prompted us to change the name to the Astronomical Software and Documentation Service.

ASDS was originally conceived to serve two purposes: to provide a useful Internet service in an area of expertise of the investigators astronomical software , and as a research project to investigate various architectures for searching through a set of documents distributed across the Internet. Two of the co-investigators were then installing and maintaining astronomical software as their primary job responsibility.

We felt that a service which incorporated our experience in this area would be more useful than a straightforward listing of software packages. Isite had some additional features that we considered attractive, and we enjoyed the cooperation of the Isite developers, who were happy to have ASDS as a demonstration project. We ended up staying with the software throughout the project, making modifications to take advantage of new features as they came along, as well as.

He was born in in Novi Sad. Even as a student of medicine he was active in scientific work, which resulted in a paper entiteled "The fine structure of the liver," later published in one of the most eminent medical journals in Europe. He completed the study of medicine in Vienna. He did not accept the position at the Medical Faculty in Vienna, and returned to Novi Sad, where he quickly gained an excellent reputation as a physician. He participated in the founding of the Serbian National Theatre in , he was also one of the most active contributors of Matica Srpska, wrote many articles, critics and reviews, and was also regarded as the founder of aesthetic romanticism in Serbs.

At that time, when he was only 30 years old, he wrote about a brand-new art - photography. On astronomical drawing [ Reprinted from the Memoirs of the Royal Astronomical Society 15, , pp. With annotations and illustrations added by Klaus Hentschel. His colorful records of the aurora polaris, and solar and terrestrial spectra all profited from his trained eye and his subtle mastery of the pen and the brush. As his paper on astronomical drawing, which we chose to reproduce in this volume, amply demonstrates, he was conversant in most of the print technology repertoire that the 19th century had to offer, and carefully selected the one most appropriate to each sujet.

Out of these papers 56 were presented in the medico-pharmaceutical session. The Congress was appraised very successful by the attenders and its honorary president, Prof. Jaroslav Hlava from Prague who concluded at the end of the Congress ".. The effects of articulatory suppression on word recognition in Serbian.

The relatedness of phonological coding to the articulatory mechanisms in visual word recognition vary in different writing systems. While articulatory suppression i. Besner proposed an experiment in the Serbian language, written in Cyrillic and Roman regular but alphabetic scripts, to disentangle the importance of script regularity vs. Articulatory suppression had an equally detrimental effect in a lexical decision task for both alphabetically regular and distorted by a mixture of the two alphabets Serbian words, but comparisons of articulatory suppression effect size obtained in Serbian to those obtained in English and Japanese suggest "alphabeticity-syllabicity" to be the more critical dimension in determining the relatedness of phonological coding and articulatory activity.

Grigor Narekatsi's astronomical insights. What stand out in the solid system of Gr. Narekatsi's naturalistic views are his astronomical insights on the material nature of light, its high speed and the Sun being composed of "material air". Especially surprising and fascinating are his views on stars and their clusters.

What astronomers , including great Armenian academician V. Ambartsumian scattering of stellar associations , would understand and prove with much difficulty thousand years later, Narekatsi predicted in the 10th century: "Stars appear and disappear untimely", "You who gather and scatter the speechless constellations, like a flock of sheep". Narekatsti's reformative views were manifested in all the spheres of the 10th century social life; he is a reformer of church life, great language constructor, innovator in literature and music, freethinker in philosophy and science.

His ideology is the reflection of the 10th century Armenian Renaissance. During the 9thth centuries, great masses of Armenians, forced to migrate to the Balkans, took with them and spread reformative ideas. The forefather of the western science, which originated in the period of Reformation, is considered to be the great philosopher Nicholas of Cusa.

The study of Gr. Narekatsti's logic and naturalistic views enables us to claim that Gr. Narekatsti is the great grandfather of European science. Astronomical Prospecting of Asteroid Resources. To make asteroid mining profitable will require professional astronomers using some of the largest telescopes on Earth to make precision measurements. This " astronomical prospecting" information is cheaper to obtain than flying even one or two spacecraft and will drastically cut the number of space probes that have to be sent to find an ore-bearing rock in space.

Astronomical prospecting could make the business case for asteroid mining a solid one. Authorship trends within the astronomical community have been studied using data drawn from the publication records of 12 refereed journals. The period covered by the study is Across all journals , the annual fraction of papers with one or two authors has decreased with time, typically accompanied by an increased propensity for papers to have six or more co-authors. There is considerable variability in the behavior of three-to-five author papers.

Reports on instrumentation developments within Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific PASP , a journal that places specific emphasis on publishing instrumentation papers, have a higher number of authors than average. The trends away from one-to-two author papers and toward papers with six or more authors show no correlation with either the annual number of papers per journal or the geographical diversity of the contributing author pools.

Presents annotated lists of: 1 general introductory books about comets and Comet Halley; 2 books about comet history and lore; 3 introductory books for younger children; and 4 books for the serious amateur astronomer. A list of magazine and journal articles is included. Developing an Undergraduate Astronomical Research Program.

Time-series astronomical photometry is an area of scientific research well suited to amateurs and undergraduates, and their backyard and campus observatories. I describe two past one-semester community college research programs, one six year ago and one last fall , as well as a program planned for this coming fall The program, a course at Central Arizona College, utilized a robotic telescope at the Fairborn Observatory. Results were presented at the th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

This past fall, three students, in a week, one-semester course at Cuesta College, were able to plan a research program, make several thousand CCD photometric observations, reduce and analyze their data, write up their results and, on the last day of class, send their paper off to a refereed journal , the JAAVSO. A course is being offered this coming fall that will involve about a dozen students including high school students , several local amateur astronomers , and at least three CCD- equipped semi-automatic telescopes.

Potential solutions to "scaling up" challenges created by increased class size are discussed. East Asian astronomical records. Chinese, Japanese and Korean celestial observations have made major contributions to Applied Historical Astronomy, especially in the study of supernovae, comets, Earth's rotation using eclipses and solar variability via sunspots and aurorae. Few original texts now survive; almost all extant records exist only in printed versions, often with the loss of much detail. The earliest Chinese astronomical observations extend back to before BC.

However, fairly systematic records are only available since BC - and even these have suffered losses through wars, etc. By around AD , many independent observations are available from Japan and Korea and these provide a valuable supplement to the Chinese data. Throughout East Asia dates were expressed in terms of a luni-solar calendar and conversion to the Julian or Gregorian calendar can be readily effected. Creativity and Anxiety in Roma and Serbian Adolescents.

In this paper, we present a research whose aim was to investigate the relationship between creativity and anxiety during the period of early adolescence. Furthermore, we were interested in discovering potential differences among Roma and Serbian adolescents at the level of creativity, situational and general anxiety. The sample consisted of 60…. In this dissertation I provide a principled, unified account of modality and causation in Serbian dative anticausatives using a typological, cognitive approach.

This analysis is set within a larger claim that the causative and modal meanings crosslinguistically arise in the same morphosyntactic environments, indicating a shared conceptual base…. Croatian edition of Milankovich's book - Astronomical theory of climate changes and its application in geophysics. The book was written in Serbian and in Cyrillic alphabet. Although Serbian and Croatian are similar languages the last could be an obstacle for understanding cited book especially for new generations in Croatia.

An idea for publication of a new Croatian eddition has been accepted by Prosvjeta, publisher from Croatia. That eddition appeared at the end of This was also an oportunity for doing a separate analysis of the book in the form of a preface to the new eddition published in Latin alphabet and Croatian terminology. In that preface, beside an analysis of book content, a short Milankovich's biography has been performed as well as an scientific echo of Milankovich's astronomical theory since until nowadays. In a summary it has been concluded that there is no any disagreement between Milankovich's theory on climate changes and recent greenhouse theory, only, a quite different time scales are under consideration i.

On the occasion of th anniversary of Milutin Milankovich 's birth. XEphem: Interactive Astronomical Ephemeris. Written in C, X11 and Motif, it is easily ported to systems. Among other things, XEphem: computes heliocentric, geocentric and topocentric information for all objects; has built-in support for all planets; the moons of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Earth; central meridian longitude of Mars and Jupiter; Saturn's rings; and Jupiter's Great Red Spot; allows user-defined objects including stars, deepsky objects, asteroids, comets and Earth satellites; provides special efficient handling of large catalogs including Tycho, Hipparcos, GSC; displays data in configurable tabular formats in conjunction with several interactive graphical views; displays a night-at-a-glance 24 hour graphic showing when any selected objects are up; displays 3-D stereo Solar System views that are particularly well suited for visualizing comet trajectories; quickly finds all close pairs of objects in the sky; and sorts and prints all catalogs with very flexible criteria for creating custom observing lists.

Its capabilities are listed more fully in the user manual introduction. Computer version of astronomical ephemerides. Angelo Adamo is an Italian astronomer and artist interested in inspiring people with scientifically-based tales. He has recently published two illustrated books exploring the relationships between mankind and cosmos through physics, art, literature, music, cartoons, and movies. Astronomical Instrumentation System Markup Language. Next it's shown how XML also provides the framework for a more precise definition of an astronomical instrument and how these instruments can be combined to form an Astronomical Instrumentation System AIS.

The files demonstrate how AISML can be utilized for various tasks from web page generation and programming interface to instrument maintenance and quality management. Astronomical databases of Nikolaev Observatory. Several astronomical databases were created at Nikolaev Observatory during the last years. Sixteenth Century Astronomical Telescopy. Together the couple seem destined to rule on earth just as their celestial counterparts rule the heavens, but the tragedy is that they are afflicted, just as the Sun and Moon are blemished.

Spots mar the Sun 1. Also reported are Jupiter's Red Spot 3. These interpretations are well-founded and support the cosmic allegory. Observations must have been made with optical aid, probably the perspective glass of Leonard Digges, father of Thomas Digges. Notably absent from Hamlet is mention of the Galilean moons, owing perhaps to the narrow field-of-view of the telescope.

That discovery is later celebrated in Cymbeline, published soon after Galileo's Siderius Nuncius in Lines in 5. I conclude therefore that astronomical telescopy began in England before the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Serbian medical students' fertility awareness and attitudes towards future parenthood.

Medical students represent a group particularly at risk of involuntary childlessness due to their highly demanding careers and university curriculum. The aim of this study was to investigate Serbian medical students' attitudes towards future parenthood and their awareness of fertility issues. A cross-sectional study was conducted among fourth year students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia, between 12 and 16 December Data were collected through an anonymous item validated questionnaire, translated into the Serbian language.

The participation rate was Both genders equally rated the importance of having children. All students wanted to have their first child before the age of 35 years. Knowledge about the age-related decline in female fertility was not satisfactory. Women found it more important to have children when they felt sufficiently mature, were in a stable relationship, were financially secure, had completed their studies, were not too old to have children, and had access to childcare, although these prerequisites were rated highly by both genders. Serbian medical students greatly value and have a positive perception of future parenthood.

Appropriate education is needed, however, because of their inadequate knowledge of the age-related decline in female fertility. Acquired dyslexia in Serbian speakers with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia. This study examined patterns of acquired dyslexia in Serbian aphasic speakers, comparing profiles of groups with Broca's versus Wernicke's aphasia. The study also looked at the relationship of reading and auditory comprehension and between reading comprehension and reading aloud in these groups.

Participants were 20 people with Broca's and 20 with Wernicke's aphasia. They were asked to read aloud and to understand written material from the Serbian adaptation of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination. The people with Broca's aphasia achieved better results in reading aloud and in reading comprehension than those with Wernicke's aphasia.

Anketa: Najbolja srpska glumica - Najbolja srpska glumica je Olivera Marković.

Those with Wernicke's aphasia showed significantly more semantic errors than those with Broca's aphasia who had significantly more morphological and phonological errors. From the data we inferred that lesion sites accorded with previous work on networks associated with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia and with a posterior-anterior axis for reading processes centred on left parietal-temporal-frontal lobes. All rights reserved. The New Amateur Astronomer. Amateur astronomy has changed beyond recognition in less than two decades. The reason is, of course, technology.

Affordable high-quality telescopes, computer-controlled 'go to' mountings, autoguiders, CCD cameras, video, and as always computers and the Internet, are just a few of the advances that have revolutionized astronomy for the twenty-first century. He then moves on to the revolutionary possibilities that are open to amateurs, from imaging, through spectroscopy and photometry, to patrolling for near-earth objects - the search for comets and asteroids that may come close to, or even hit, the earth.

The New Amateur Astronomer is a road map of the new astronomy, equally suitable for newcomers who want an introduction, or old hands who need to keep abreast of innovations. From the reviews: "This is one of several dozen books in Patrick Moore's "Practical Astronomy" series. Amid this large family, Mobberley finds his niche: the beginning high-tech amateur. The book's first half discusses equipment: computer-driven telescopes, CCD cameras, imaging processing software, etc.

This market is changing every bit as rapidly as the computer world, so these details will be current for only a year or two. The rest of the book offers an overview of scientific projects that serious amateurs are carrying out these days. Throughout, basic formulas and technical terms are provided as needed, without formal derivations.

An appendix with useful references and Web sites is also included. Readers will need more than this book if they are considering a plunge into high-tech amateur astronomy, but it certainly will whet their appetites. Mobberley's most valuable advice will save the book's owner many times its cover price: buy a quality telescope from a reputable dealer and install it in a simple shelter so it can be used with as little set-up time as. Enthusiastic Little Astronomers. Younger primary school students often show great interest in the vast Universe hiding behind the starry night's sky, but don't have a way of learning about it and exploring it in regular classes.

Some of them would search children's books, Internet or encyclopedias for information or facts they are interested in, but there are those whose hunger for knowledge would go unfulfilled. Such students were the real initiators of our extracurricular activity called Little Astronomers. With great enthusiasm they would name everything that interests them about the Universe that we live in and I would provide the information in a fun and interactive yet acceptable way for their level of understanding.

In our class we learn about Earth and its place in the Solar System, we learn about the planets and other objects of our Solar System and about the Sun itself. We also explore the night sky using programs such as Stellarium, learning to recognize constellations and name them. Most of our activities are done using a PowerPoint presentation, YouTube videos, and Internet simulations followed by some practical work the students do themselves.

Because of the lack of available materials and funds, most of materials are hand made by the teacher leading the class. We also use the school's galileoscope as often as possible.

Every year the students are given the opportunity to go to an observatory in a town 90 km away so that they could gaze at the sky through the real telescope for the first time. Our goal is to start stepping into the world of astronomy by exploring the secrets of the Universe and understanding the process of rotation and revolution of our planet and its effects on our everyday lives and also to become more aware of our own role in our part of the Universe.

The hunger for knowledge and enthusiasm these students have is contagious. They are becoming more aware of their surroundings and also understanding their place in the Universe that helps them remain humble and helps. Long-publishing astronomers , or the problem of classification. In response to several discussions among astronomers and historians of astronomy, I started out to prepare a paper on long-publishing astronomers -those who published for 70, 75, or even 80 years.

However, I soon ran into a number of questions of classification, and that turned out to be at least as interesting. How do we decide on classifications? Every time we choose classes, such as asteroids, planets and stars, we run into objects that seem to be in between. In the present case a number of questions arise: Who is an astronomer? Several of those with the longest publication runs started out as physicists, published for years in that subject only, and later took up astrophysics, eventually publishing a few papers in astronomy journals.

What is a publication? Should we count publications in physics, chemistry, or mathematics? What about philosophy of science or history of science? What about the elderly retired astronomer presenting a memoir of his or her own work? Abstracts of oral presentations? Book reviews? Then there is the problem of posthumous publications. Probably most would include papers in the pipeline when the astronomer dies, but what about the case where the coauthor finally publishes the paper as much as twenty-two years after the death of the person of interest? I eventually decided to make two lists, one which would include most of the above, and one restricted to papers that make contributions to physical science.

Note that I do not say 'refereed', as that presents its own problems, especially when applied to periods before the twentieth century. I present a list of astronomers who have published for periods of 68 to 80 years and discuss the problems of defining such terms as astronomer and publication. Navigating from Publications to Astronomical Databases. The implementation of journals on the Web has opened new possibilities for the scientific usage of published results because it is now possible to link published articles to other types of information.

The availability of published information in electronic form also allows for new types of content validation, complementary to the referee's validation, and to the layout performed by the publisher. This experiment is still a prototype, and its various aspects are presented here. Astronomers debate diamonds in space.

Like the others, it's a carbon-rich star now in the process of dying. It has been blasting out huge amounts of material over the last thousand years, becoming enclosed within a shell of dust hundreds of times larger than the Solar System --a structure called a "protoplanetary nebula". It was in this dust -- very cold and therefore invisible to non-infrared telescopes-- that the Spanish group using ISO's SWS and LWS spectrometers detected the signature of the carbonaceous compound, in the form of a broad emission band at the wavelength of 21 micron.

It is a real textbook case, with one of the strongest emissions ever detected. His group published their results in the March 10 issue of the Astrophysical Journal. They favour the fullerene option. Fullerenes would get formed during decomposition of the solid carbon grains condensed out of the material emitted by the star. The Canadian group obtained high-resolution ISO spectra of seven other stars in this class, and also detected a weak emission of the carbonaceous compound in a new one.

They present their data in the May 11 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. It is quite possible that the 21 micron feature arises from any one of these forms, although not exactly like they are on Earth", says main author Sun Kwok, at the University of Calgary.

His group detected the carbonaceous compound a decade ago, for the first time, with the earlier infrared satellite IRAS. Meanwhile, results from the French group led by Louis d'Hendecourt, at the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale, in Paris, are adding to the debate. They isolated very tiny. We work in four observing projects: B. Interference in astronomical speckle patterns.

Astronomical speckle patterns are examined in an atmospheric-optics context in order to determine what kind of image quality is to be expected from several different imaging techniques.

The model used to describe the instantaneous complex field distribution across the pupil of a large telescope regards the pupil as a deep phase grating with a periodicity given by the size of the cell of uniform phase or the refractive index structure function. This model is used along with an empirical formula derived purely from the physical appearance of the speckle patterns to discuss the orders of interference in astronomical speckle patterns. Astronomical Archive at Tartu Observatory. Archiving astronomical data is important task not only at large observatories but also at small observatories.

Here we describe the astronomical archive at Tartu Observatory. The archive consists of old photographic plate images, photographic spectrograms, CCD direct--images and CCD spectroscopic data. The photographic plate digitizing project was started in An on-line database based on MySQL was created. The database includes CCD data as well photographic data. The research was carried out on a sample of high school students females, males , with the mean age The Global Acne Grading Score was used to measure the clinical severity of acne.

The internal consistency reliability of the Serbian version of CADI was assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient while its concurrent validity was assessed by Spearman's correlation coefficient. Construct validity was examined by factor analysis. A total of pupils completed questionnaires. The mean item-total correlation coefficient was 0. A syntactic-semantic investigation of subjunctive and indicative "da"-complements in Serbian is conducted in this project.

After a careful comparison of Serbian sentence constructions with "da"-complements to the equivalent sentence structures in languages of the Balkans as well as other Slavic languages, it is clearly…. Aim: Alphaantitrypsin A1AT is the main inhibitor of neutrophil elastase, and severe alphaantitrypsin deficiency A1ATD is a genetic risk factor for early-onset emphysema. Despite the relatively high prevalence of A1ATD, this condition is frequently underdiagnosed.

The A1ATD variants were identified by isoelectric focusing or polymerase chain reaction-mediated site-directed mutagenesis. Australian sites of astronomical heritage. The heritage of astronomy in Australia has proven an effective communication medium. By interpreting science as a social and cultural phenomenon new light is thrown on challenges, such as the dispersal of instruments and problems identifying contemporary astronomy heritage.

Astronomers are asked to take note and to consider the communication of astronomy now and in the future through a tangible heritage legacy. Simple Astronomical Theory of Climate. The author derives, applying perturbation theory, from a simple astronomical model the approximate periods of secular variation of some of the parameters of the Earth's orbit and relates these periods to the past climate of the Earth, indicating the difficulties in predicting the climate of the future.

Relativistic problems on astronomical constants. The fact that modern astronomical observational technique has made rapid progress and the 1PN approximation of general relativity has been extensively applied in celestial mechanics and astrometry, makes it is necessary to investigate and examine the system of astronomical constants carefully and rigorously in the relativistic framework. The mass of a celestial body in the solar system should be defined as its BD mass that changes relatively in an amount less than and could be considered as a constant.

The equations satisfied by the gravitational potentials are not Poisson equations anymore but depend on the choice of the coordinate gauge. Therefore the gravitational potentials cannot be expanded in the traditional harmonics. It is neccessary to choose the coordinate gauge and take BD multipole moments as astronomical constants. The obliquity of the ecliptic has been determined in high precision and it would be neccessary to give a conventional definition of the 1PN ecliptic. A relativistic definition of the geoid is important and left to be discussed. The astronomical constants that relate the units of time and length have been clearly defined but need to be clarified to avoid their misuse.

The Astronomical Photographic Data Archive. Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute is the home of the Astronomical Photographic Data Archive APDA , a national effort to preserve, archive, and digitize astronomical photographic plate collections. APDA was formed in and presently holds more than , plates and films from more than a dozen observatory collections.

While the photographic data pre-dates modern observational data taken with electronic instruments, it is nevertheless of extremely high quality. When one considers , plates and films in the APDA collection, some with 's or 's of objects per plate, and plates taken over years the value of the data in APDA becomes apparent. The measuring machines were used by a team of scientists under the leadership of the late Dr. We will describe the current set of collections, plans for the measuring machines, and the efforts that have been made to assure preservation of plate collections.

Astronomical Applications - Naval Oceanography Portal. Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory. It also gives an overview about the VLBI activities during the previous year. The outlook lists the outstanding tasks to improve the performance of GGAO. This report provides an overview of the presentations and summaries of discussions at IAU Colloquium , which was held in Washington, D.

The topics included: the publication and acquisition of books and journals ; searching for astronomical information; the handling and use of special-format materials; conservation; archiving of unpublished documents; uses of computers in libraries; astronomical databases and various aspects of the administration of astronomy libraries and services. Particular attention was paid to new developments, but the problems of astronomers and institutions in developing countries were also considered. John Twysden and John Palmer: 17th-century Northamptonshire astronomers.

John Twysden and John Palmer were two astronomers in the circle of Samuel Foster circa , the subject of a recent paper in this journal. John Twysden qualified in law and medicine and led a peripatetic life around England and Europe. The two astronomers catalogued observations made from Northamptonshire from the s to the s.

In their later years Twysden and Palmer published works on a variety of topics, often astronomical. Palmer engaged in correspondence with Henry Oldenburg, the first secretary of the Royal Society, on topics in astronomy and mathematics. Latin American astronomers and the International Astronomical Union. Selected aspects of the participation of the Latin American astronomers in the International Astronomical Union are presented: Membership, Governing bodies, IAU meetings, and other activities. The Union was founded in with 7 initial member states, soon to be followed by Brazil.

In Mexico joined, and in Argentina also formed part of the Union, while Chile joined in At present October 72 countries contribute financially to the Union. This group comprises 5. Of the Latin American members, Astronomical Heritage in the National Culture. The book may be interesting for astronomers , historians, archaeologists, linguists, students and other readers. Clinical research involving minors in international and serbian regulations. Participation in clinical trials can be useful for the health of a person, in who it is conducted, but it does not have to be - it can even be harmful.

Therefore, primary motive to accept such risk is humanity and human wish to contribute to the progress of medicine; this is expressed by personal consent. The consent, however, can be an expression of personal humanity, and for this, it is not logical that someone can give consent on behalf of someone else, as it is done by a legally authorized representative on behalf of a minor. Therefore, authors raise 3 questions: What are the reasons to consider representative's consent acceptable? How should a model of regulations look like in order to provide the most complete possible protection to a minor?

Is actual regulation of minors' position within international and Serbian law, analyzed here by authors for their specific solutions, acceptable?

Representative's consent is acceptable only for therapeutic research, because these can bring benefits to everyone's health, including a minor in which those are conducted - this is an acceptable secondary motive of participation in the research. Expression of humanity on other's behalf, typical for non-therapeutic research, is not acceptable; this makes ban of minors' participation in non-therapeutic research more appropriate regulation model. International regulations are not in accordance to results presented in the paper for allowing participation of minors both in therapeutic and non-therapeutic research.

Serbian regulation is closer to the most acceptable regulation model. Astronomical Data and Information Visualization.
